Assessing parents for the return home of their children is challenging. Parent assessors must have relevant knowledge about good restoration practice.

This is a two-part course:

• The first part is a self-paced distance-learning course entitled Foundations for Good Restoration Practice. In order to be able to assess if a parent has the capacity to safely care for their child/ren, assessors understand key messages from research, be aware of parental capacity to change, and work in a culturally competent and trauma informed way. The assessment tasks for this course may take 6-8 hours to complete and must be successfully completed before attending the face-to-face component. One task requires contact with a parent. If your role does not allow this, you won’t be able to complete this course.

• The second part is a one day face to face session that will familiarise you with the Step by Step Parent Assessment Tool, and examine some key practice issues in developing parent case plan goals.
