Real world communication skills and strategies to engage and develop supportive relationships with people with “Big Emotions”, Emotional Dysregulation, having “Melt Downs”, frequent anger, aggression, violence and high-risk behaviours that may lead to harm of self or others.
Develop the skills to recognise, understand and respond to those “Big Emotions” when people are upset & emotionally dysregulated (including you!). Everybody Hurts Sometimes! This one-day workshop looks at helping to manage heightened emotional states in self & others and offers a range of strategies and techniques that can be used to teach emotional regulation – at any age!. When humans are treated unfairly, abused, discriminated against or provoked, anger & emotional upset usually results. In terms of survival, these emotional reactions can be looked at as choosing ‘fight’ as opposed to ‘flight’. Everybody Hurts Sometimes...
You will learn about:
- Understanding anger – What is anger and why do some people seem to develop ‘Anger problems’?
- Human brain development – emotional regulation, attachment, how empathy develops, why do some people deliberately hurt others?
- Mental health issues -recognising/responding to people experiencing Anxiety, Depression, Self-injury, Suicidal behaviour, Psychosis, Trauma/PTSD. Best practice and current treatment approaches.
- Disabilities and their role in anger – ADHD, conduct disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Personality disorders
- Neurodiversity, disabilities and their role in regulating emotions – ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Aspergers, Pathological Demand Avoidance, Conduct Disorders.
- Risk Assessment – responding to people who are “At Risk of Harm”, recognising serious risk and responding appropriately, when/where to refer on!
- Managing crisis situations – how to respond, de-escalation, defusing, anger management.
- Personality Disorders – Narcissism, Emotionally Unstable PD (used to be Borderline PD!), Sociopathy, Psychopathy! How these influence emotions & communication.
- Social media, cyber-bullying, violence in the media, video gaming, gambling, screen addiction, Gaslighting & manipulation!
- Strategies and techniques for managing heightened emotions de-escalation, counselling, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness, social skills training, problem solving, Polyvagal theory, new Trauma treatments including Psychedelics.
- Understanding and Responding to Domestic and Family Violence – how to support survivors.
- Personal safety and self-care – Professionalism, boundaries and confidentiality, supervision and debriefing.
