Groupwork provides an opportunity for participants to gain both emotional support from others in the group and to more confidently deal with the emotional and psychological challenges that life presents to us all. This workshop is intended to assist you to be able to establish an atmosphere where participants feel safe to share with others, to explore their challenges together and to share strategies in dealing with those challenges.

This workshop utilises the strengths of the group members in a mutual aid approach to further their life skills.

The structure of the workshop will include:

  • Where do you start – how do you decide if a groupwork program would be helpful?
  • Where can you get help – who should you talk to and/or collaborate with to develop your proposed program?
  • What is involved in this collaboration? – Who does what?
  • Developing your group program content and structure the program to ensure that learning theories are a core influence
  • How do you assess whether potential participants will be compatible with the aims of the group program?
  • Developing awareness of the communication skills and competencies required, to ensure the functionality of the groupwork program and the ongoing communication of the members with each other
  • These communication competencies will involve developing an understanding of groupwork theories including the stages of group formation, group communication dynamics, and how to manage challenging behaviours including conflict, expression of strong emotions, and how to encourage and support participants during vulnerable periods
  • How to develop evaluation tools to assist you to assess the impacts of the program and your own impact and to guide you in making changes to the program or to the communication patterns to provide the most effective support

Workers who are required to develop and/or run client groups for therapeutic development, growth of self insight and new learning
