Advanced Conducting Investigative Interviews with Children When Allegations Have Been Made Against Staff About Reportable Conduct or Professional Misconduct

This advanced course builds on the information and skills covered in the Introduction course and furthers participants’ knowledge, skills and confidence by covering:

  • Child development and how it relates to interviewing practice
  • How to question children in a developmentally appropriate way
  • How to plan for an interview a child with disabilities
  • Using various age appropriate tools to invite, support and record disclosures
  • Cognitive interviewing techniques and conversation management tools
  • Managing the outcomes of the interview

This advanced course is a highly interactive and practical workshop that balances theory, interview practice and the use of child focused interviewing tools. Participants’ confidence and competence will interview children in a more proficient way resulting in reduction in the number of times a child may need to be interviewed. 
Frequently asked questions on what to do and what to ask when interviewing children will be explored. These questions include:

  • What are some of the planning issues I need to think about before I interview a child?
  • What are some of the child development issues I need to think about before I start the interview with a child?
  • What else do I need to think about if the child has a disability?
  • How much detail do I need to gather during the interview?
  • What types of questions should I use when I’m gathering the detail?
  • What are some helpful things to say when closing the interview?

Participants will also have opportunities to practice interviewing skills throughout the two days.
