Assessing Relative Kinship Carers

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

Assessing relative kinship carers is usually more complicated than assessing foster carers, and requires both a different approach and additional understanding and skills.

This one day course was developed by Toni Bolte, and will support carer assessors who are working for agencies and also independently.

The course covers:

  • Overcoming resistance and suspicion to build rapport and engagement
  • Difficult conversations: thinking and talking about risk (child protection and police history)
  • Understanding and assessing carer applicant's past trauma
  • Guidance for assessing through complicated family dynamics
  • The implications from research

Note: A 'Relative Kinship Carer' is defined as a relative, or someone the child already knows. They may or may not be Aboriginal.

Who should attend?

Assessors who need to build their skills and knowledge in assessing relative kinship carers

Note: Experience in using the Step by Step Assessment tool is NOT a prerequisite.

This course is not eligible for Member Discount or Corporate Pass.
