Joint Protocol Training for ITC and Residential Care Workers
This free training module is designed to support staff working in residential settings to implement the Joint Protocol to reduce the contact of young people in residential out-of-home care (OOHC) and intensive therapeutic care (ITC) with the criminal justice system.
Developed by ACWA, together with the Department of Communities and Justice, Legal Aid NSW and the Lighthouse Institute, this training package includes video content about trauma, its impacts, and working with young people who have experienced trauma. Two case studies are used to demonstrate how to implement trauma principles into practice. The focus then shifts to how to use the Joint Protocol to reduce the number of times that police are called to respond to disputes in residential OOHC and ITC services, using two case studies as a basis for the learning.

The Joint Protocol was developed by the NSW Ombudsman, based on extensive consultation with a number of stakeholders including non-government residential OOHC and ITC agencies, NSW Police, the Department of Communities and Justice, Legal Aid NSW, and members of ACWA’s Residential Care Providers Network.
