Parent Assessment for Restoration Tool Assessment Skills (Step by Step)

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

Assessing parents for the return home of their children is challenging. Parent assessors must have relevant knowledge about good restoration practice in addition to good assessment skills.

This is a two-part course:

  • The first part is a self-paced distance-learning course entitled Foundations for Good Restoration Practice. In order to be able to assess if a parent has the capacity to safely care for their child/ren, assessors must be able to understand key messages from research, be aware of parental capacity to change, and work in a culturally competent and trauma informed way. The assessment tasks for this course must be successfully completed before attending the face-to-face component. One of the tasks requires contact with a parent. If your role does not allow this, you won’t be able to complete this course.
  • The second part is a three-day face-to-face course that teaches how to use the Step-by-Step Parent Assessment Tools and teaches effective parent engagement skills and provides opportunities to practice these. Guidance is provided on how to ensure assessments are not biased and how to analyse and record information. There are opportunities to practice recording information and analysis and learners receive feedback.

All participants will receive a free parent assessment manual and access to all electronic report templates.
