In NSW in June 2018 the adult prison population stood at 13,630. The majority of these prisoners serve short sentences and are then released in to community. In 2015-2016, 299 young people aged 10 years and older were detained in NSW Juvenile Justice detention Centers. After release these people access a wide range of community services and typically present with multiple, complex and specific transitional needs.

Through the use of interactive, adult learning activities, exploration, discussion and presentation of information, this workshop will enable participants to develop, practice and refine skills, attitudes, knowledge, practical strategies and confidence to provide supports to people transitioning from custody to community.

By the end of the workshop, you will have:

  • Increased your understanding of the issues that commonly contribute to criminal offending and incarceration
  • Identified risk factors for offending
  • Understood some of the impacts of incarceration
  • Acquired skills, strategies and knowledge to provide effective services and supports to clients transitioning from both adult and juvenile custodial facilities to community
  • Increased your confidence in engaging and working with this client group
