Beyond the Prison Gates

On any day in NSW there are over 9000 people in prison. Most are serving short sentences and 70% have previously been to prison, so high numbers of ex-offenders approach a broad range of services after release. Workers are often overwhelmed with the amount and complexity of issues that ex-offenders present with.

This course will provide participants with an understanding of the typical issues that lead to criminal offending and the impacts of imprisonment. An overview of the NSW prison system will be provided and an induction to prison DVD will provide learners with an ‘inside look’ at prison life.

Interactive activities will be used to highlight patterns in offenders life trajectories which often include placement in out of home care as a child, incarceration in a juvenile justice facility followed by graduation to the ‘big house’ – adult prison. Hypothetical client stories will be used to provide opportunities for participants to develop and practice strategies and approaches to provide effective and collaborative support to clients.

By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • Have increased understanding about the issues that commonly contribute to criminal offending and incarceration
  • Identify risk factors for offending
  • Learn about how the prison system works
  • Describe some impacts of incarceration
  • Acquire skills and knowledge to provide effective services and supports to clients transitioning from prison to community
  • Have increased confidence in engaging and working with this client group
  • Reflect on own assumptions about working with this client group

Who should attend?
