Community and health sector workers are often required to represent the interests of their clients or the communities in which they work. This distance package identifies opportunities for advocacy and representation and suggests strategies to improve the effectiveness of work in this area.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Examine models of negotiation and advocacy
• Identify opportunities for advocacy
• Outline the nature and power structures of the community services and health industries
• Learn the appropriate role of an advocate or representative
• Consider the ethical and practical issues that can arise during advocacy processes
• Learn about legal processes such as guardianship and power of attorney
• Evaluate the effectiveness of your advocacy or representation activities
